DIY Crushed Chili Flakes

There is only so many raw hot peppers somebody can eat before getting sick of them, so what do you do with that big pepper harvest? A couple of weeks ago, we finally got around to processing the chilis from the 2017 season that we had hung to dry. It was a first attempt for us, but it was painstakingly simple! If you have a surplus in your hot pepper harvest that you haven't decided what to do with, give homemade chili flakes a try!

3 Easy steps!

First, use a needle and thread to sting up all of your peppers to dry. This can be done a number of ways, such as in the oven if your impatient, and want to get going right aways. Personally, I love letting the sun and nature do all the work!

The second step is to wait until your peppers have completely dried out, and are brittle to the touch. Now you can use a knife to remove the stems, and the puncture point of your hanging thread.

Last but not least, crush your chilis into flakes that are sized to your liking! I found a zip lock bag and rolling pin made for quick work! A little detail with the wooden masher finished them up nice. Fantastic flavor from home grown veggies that will now have the shelf life to last for months!
